Increase in Private Education Expenses Due to Distance Learning (Part 2)

[The Public = Daniel Park] The proportion of students who spent an average of 700,000 won or more per month on private education was 15.8%, up 3.0%p from the previous year. On the other hand, those with less than 100,000 to 200,000 won decreased by 11.3%, those with less than 100,000 won by 5.3%, and those who did not receive it by 24.5%, down 0.3%, 1.7%, and 8.4%, respectively.

By region, Seoul (29.8%), metropolitan cities (14.9%), and small and medium-sized cities (14.9%) spent the most on private education spending more than 700,000 won, and in the eup and myeon district, between 100,000 and less than 200,000 won (14.5%) stood out. The rate of not receiving private education was the highest in the eup and myeon area (32.8%).

The average monthly private education cost per student for each general subject was 281,000 won, up 17.6% from a year ago. English (112,000 won), mathematics (105,000 won), Korean (30,000 won), and social sciences (16,000 won) were spent the most. Arts and physical education, hobbies and culture rose 38.0% from the previous year to 83,000 won.

By school level, the average monthly private education expenditure per elementary school student was 209,000 won for general subjects, up 31.9% from the previous year, and arts and physical education to 119,000 won, up 55.5% from the previous year. For middle school students, general subjects increased by 14.9% to 350,000 won, and arts and sports increased by 12.3% to 41,000 won. For high school students, general subjects increased by 6.2% to 357,000 won, and arts and physical education was 54,000 won, up 5.1% from the previous year.

The average monthly private education cost per participating student was 460,000 won, an increase of 1.4% for general subjects. English 225,000 won, math 207,000 won, Korean 122,000 won, and social sciences 116,000 won were the most spent.

For all students, private education expenses by type of general subject were the highest at 195,000 won, an increase of 18.6% from the previous year. Individual tutoring was 38,000 won, group tutoring was 24,000 won, and Internet and communication services were followed by 13,000 won. For arts and physical education, hobbies, and liberal arts, private academy attendance was the highest at 64,000 won.

In terms of participating students, private tutoring was the highest at 438,000 won, followed by private tutoring at 374,000 won, group tutoring at 262,000 won, and internet/communications at 126,000 won.

The most common reason for participating in private education related to general subjects such as Korean, English, and mathematics was supplementary school classes (50.5%), followed by prior learning (23.8%) and preparation for college (14.2%). High school students also had the largest share of supplementary school classes (47.5%), but preparation for higher education (32.1%) had a greater proportion than prior learning (16.6%).

The Ministry of Education admitted that while face-to-face activities increased last year compared to 2020, parents also had a lot of distrust in public education distance learning.

An official from the Ministry of Education said, "It is true that remote classes have increased or were concurrently conducted in the metropolitan area, which has caused various difficulties in students' concentration and understanding at home. It led to anxiety and concern about the decline and led to the choice of increasing private education,” he explained.
